One of the questions that I get asked often is how I get my clients as an event contractor. I have been so fortunate to never wonder where my next gig is going to come from, and I am happy to share what I know with you. I know this is a hot topic, so settle in.
Through people you know in the industry.
No marketing, no joining networking groups, no responding to RFPs.
Except for 1 (more on that below), every company I have ever worked with has come my way via someone I have worked with.
If you work in the industry, you likely have a big network of people who you’ve worked with and would be happy to hire you in the future or pass your name along to others.
Your network will eventually move on and go to other companies, typically within the same industry. And that expands your network even further.
It’s important to get your name out there so that you’re top of mind when people are looking for a contractor.
I love having a website, but it’s pretty useless when it comes to looking for new projects. This industry is very highly referral-based. In my case, I enjoy having a face to my brand and being able to post information that is valuable to others, but I’ve never used it as a marketing tool for new projects.
